When was Corryong founded?

Corryong was founded in the 1850's, It developed as a result of the Australian gold rushes of the 19th century, with prospectors and settlers arriving in the area in search of gold and other opportunities.

After the Australian gold rush of the 1850s, a wave of hopeful families ventured to the Upper Murray, seeking a fresh start. This influx of settlers, comprised of farmers, miners, tradespeople, and their kin, created a burgeoning demand for various goods and services. Recognizing this need, the government made a strategic decision to establish a vital service town.

Corryong's foundation as a township took shape in the late 1870s, officially gaining recognition with a gazette in 1875. The town's principal artery, Hanson Street, was aptly named in honor of Joseph Hanson, a respected figure in the community who had been a part of the region since the early 1840s. As a testament to the growing community's commitment to education, the Upper Murray's inaugural government school commenced operations in 1877.

  • In the 2016 Census, there were 1,348 people in Corryong. Of these 49.7% were male and 50.3% were female. Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people made up 1.9% of the population.

  • The most common ancestries in Corryong were English 33.6%, Australian 29.5%, Irish 8.7%, Scottish 8.6% and German 4.5%.
